Is Flood Insurance Expensive in Florida?

Welcome to the Sunshine State, Elevation at my location 25 feet.

Often folks will hear stories about expensive flood insurance in paradise and be dissuaded from purchasing a home here.  That's true and it's not.

Most of the state of Florida is in some type of flood zone, my home is supposed to get flooded every one to five hundred years.  I still remember being in fifth grade and learning that the world would be out of gasoline by the time I got to high school.  So I'm not super concerned about predictions of what the future will bring - especially if those predictions are by the government.

I will say that you should get an insurance quote on any property that you are interested in purchasing.  I sold a 900sf river front home that was 100 years old and was more than surprised by the premium.  So my advice is get educated and shop around.  But that's good advice for all of life, too.
