Does Florida Have Good Universities?

Image
Welcome to Florida. I grew up in the Northeast, Boston in fact, and although I knew there were Universities run by the State of Massachusetts, I never met anyone who attended one.   It may seem incredibly snobbish but, with a number of my friends leaving high school and going to Harvard or MIT, the idea of attending a government college didn't seem like the best route to success. But then I moved to Florida! Sure, the athletics are great and the Florida State vs. University of Florida rivalry is fun no matter who you root for, but, oftentimes people overlook what great schools these are.  The competition to get in is truly cut throat and the challenges once enrolled are immense.  I would be proud to have any member of my family attend one of these schools.  And the rest of the state system in Florida has something for everyone.  I have friends who attended UCF and won't shut up about what a stellar education they received and even the lowly Key West Community College is w

Is The Beach Too Hot In Sarasota, In August?

Welcome to Florida. I once heard someone say it was too hot at the beach.   It seemed like a counter intuitive statement, because of the presence of the ocean and all.   And because I heard this statement in May. On Cape Cod. And I was wearing a zip up sweatshirt. I guess temperature, like life, is all about perception.    When it’s 92 degrees in the city   and only slightly cooler at the beach it does feel kinda warm.   Which is why I swim in the ocean to cool off.   Regardless of the month.   It always makes my beach visit extra fun. But, I’ve also meet people from “up north” that love the beach here in August.    In fact, they can’t get enough of it and tell too many people how great Florida Beaches are in the summer. Even if you're wearing long pants! So my advice is too find other people that know how to have a good time and head to one of our many beautiful beaches.   Even if it’s just for a dance contest in August.   You’ll be glad y

Where Is The Best Place In Sarasota To Have Drinks?!?

Welcome To Florida. For new residents there sometimes is the thought that all outdoor activities should be suspended during July and August in the State. There may be true for daytime recreational activities such as golf.  Noontime tee offs seem crazy to everyone, heck my course just underwent a multi-million dollar makeover which was scheduled for the summer.  The course was completly closed for two solid months and I'm not even sure anyone even noticed. So the only two summertime, outdoor recreational activities that I approve of, are boating and evening cocktails.  I've written extensively on boating but cocktails need their far share of blog time as well.  Unfortunately, if you are looking for a waterfront downtown location where the beverages are top notch, the staff is superb and there is a live mermaid laying across the bar on Friday and Saturday nights there is only one location. And I would love to give you the exact name and address of this place but I don't
