What's The Best Dog Breed (for florida)?

Welcome to Florida.

When I first moved to Paradise, I thought that many dog breeds that were common in the North wouldn't work here.  I mean with our summer tempretures, the thought of a Boston Terrier and it's short "heat unfriendly" snout; I couldn't imagine that it would make any sense here.  But I was wrong.  It's actually pretty easy for dogs to adjust from cold environments to warm environments and not the other way around.

A dog born and raised in Michigan who suddenly finds himself on the Suncoast adapts pretty quickly, plus with Florida law prohibiting dogs being left unattended outside, a smattering of dog walks everyday in warm temperatures is pretty good for all involved.  However, if anyone asks me what the best breed dog for a new resident who has just moved here; I would have to vote for a Florida Cur Hound.

When Florida was settled these dogs were the original working dogs in the state.  They could hunt (sent or sight), protect the family with ferocity and even be cross trained for a variety of rural tasks including herding farm animals.  The first Cur Hound I met had saved his owner/hunter from a boar and was seriously injured, when the beast got past his kevlar vest. This guy was a hero to his family and had a retirement setup that most humans would envy.

If you haven't seen or heard of a Cur Hound, it's the type of Hound "Old Yella" was.  Yella was specifically a "Black Mouth" Cur which is the most popular Cur, followed by a Plott Hound.  They are all good Florida Hounds intent on being protective family members and ready to work....
