Is It Easy to Make Friends in Florida?

Welcome to Paradise.

Our three and a half year old was born at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and just started part time preschool.  He loves it, mostly because there aren't that many kids in our neighborhood and he has a bunch of friends his age (finally).   The funny thing is, most of his little friends weren't born in Florida.  Rocky doesn't care, his friends moved here, his parents moved here and as far as he knows only he and our Florida Cur Hound were born in the state.

That's the thing, Florida is made up of a bunch of transplants that (mostly) are in the market for new friends.  We are working on Florida history at home now and talk about the big battles that shaped Florida for better or worse.  Every Floridian knows Major Dade because of the massacre but most people don't know he wasn't from Florida.  He came here from Virginia.  For some reason Rocky's favorite soldier is General Finnegan who saved Tallahassee, when it almost fell.  Finnegan wasn't even born in America but came to pledge his life to our state.

So yeah, super easy to meet new people and make friends in Florida because everyone in Florida is trying to do the same thing.  Except our 3 1/2 year old and Dog everyone is new, so lead with a smile and you'll have a new crew in no time.  And probably be spellbound when they tell their story of how that came to move to Florida.....

Did John Ringling Build Dwarf Houses For The Little People That Worked For Him?

Welcome to Sarasota. New residents will often not notice all that John Ringling did for our city.  I've gone to his church (built with excess circus equipment).  Had closings at the bank he founded and frequently visit the barrier islands he developed.  We all do.  But it wasn't until recently that I saw the homes he reportedly built for the little people in his employ. What's Better a Lake or the Ocean?

Welcome to Paradise. When I first came to Florida, I avoided lakes altogether.  I was freaked out about alligators, thought lakes were "buggy" and didn't own a pontoon boat :-D so, I focused on the ocean.  Fun.  But after our son was born EVERYTHING was back on the table, including lakes. It did take a minute to figure out that you really shouldn't compare Lakes and the Ocean, for us, one cannot replace the other.  But, both can compliment one another.  We swim or dive off docks at lakes, good times, and also wakeboard and wake skate.  Our son even took the wheels off his skateboard and has ridden that around several lakes in Florida and Georgia.  Plus we like to swim in Lagoons and Slough(s) when the mood strikes (my next post will probably be explaining what a slough is).  Also, on the way to open ocean we often wakeboard or wake surf behind our boat in the inter-coastal (I will not explain what the inter-coastal is because, I have tried and by the time I get to Bro
